Fan Service: Gifts of The Fans, Part 1

By Tuck • May 18th, 2009 • Category: Geek Features (New Every Few Days!)

Fans.

I love our fans. We call them “True Believers.” We call them “Geeks.” We call them “Viewers.” Every episode, our Geeks’ discussion starts in our Basement of Dreams, but it lives on with them. With you. We may start a rant about the latest geeky thing, but you all continue it, and sometimes finish it.

And it is you that, somehow inspired by our efforts, do something funky. Something cool. Something that stirs the Geeks, and reminds us that every show we shoot, every discussion we start, every thing we make fun of – we do it for you.

And so, I want to take a little time to give back. That’s the purpose of this new Feature – to focus in on the good works that the Geeks collect from our fans, so remind us how much we affect all of you.

For the first round of “Fan Service,” I wanted to share the thing that inspired me to start the segment. For the past few months, I’ve received letting of accolade, I’ve received requests for the Geeks to turn their attention to new and exciting projects and services – all of which we see and try to mention, but time often gets ahead of us a keeps us from doing the job we’d like to do. And every once and a while, I see a gem of devotion appear. The first item I ever recieved that started me thinking about how much we mean to people was a essay (which I will share with everyone in the near future, now that I have a forum in which I’ll be able to present it). And slowly, I see new things all the time. But today, for the first time ever, the Geeks With Issues were the subject of a piece of Fan Art.

Fan Art! Being a Geek, I know the importance of Fan Art. Geeks are creative and imaginative folks, who are constantly looking for new and exciting ways to express their fandom of things. Writers write stories, and essays. Video editors take songs and video clips and create AMVs (Anime Music Videos) or similar content. And artist draw. They see things in their favorite content, and are inspired to act and to create. In addition to being a piece of unique and often striking art, they are also a doorway into a fan’s connection to their content.

So when Jens, one of our True Believers (sending us a message from a German domain, no less!), sent this picture, I was floored:

Mollie! As Fan Art!

For anyone who is wondering what inspired this shot, check out Episode 112 when it launches. Mollie is wearing this exact outfit, which is rendered quite fantastically.

This sort of stuff is so inspiring. I know that Mollie was super excited to see herself rendered in sketch (and was curious about the whip – which also resembles a microphone), and I’m really touched to see that she and our Geeks are inspiring such outpourings of interest. It inspired me to create a new section in the recently repaired “Geekshots” section of the site. You’ll see it at the top for the next few days – it’s called “Fan Art!” It’s started with one, humble image, and I hope that it will one day include a vast collection of art, both as a testament to our True Believers, and as a constant reminder to us Geeks that when we do our show, it’s you we do it for.

Thank you Jens, and thank you True Believers. Because of you, today we Geek On.

NEXT TIME ON “FAN SERVICE:”
We take the time to focus on a gentleman that the Geeks consider our very first “True Believer,” and one of the few viewers who’s seen the show live since Episode 001.
