Chris points out some extra tools that help you geek-on and geek-out at GwI Online.

I pulled this post out of the archives for the benefit of any new True Believers out there.

True Believers,

I know how easy it is to overlook the smaller details of website, especially when they are tucked away in a corner, so I wanted to point you to the bottom of the Geeks with Issues website.

At the toe of every page on our site you’ll find the following:

There are a couple of tools on this line that can be very useful to any True Believer. First, you can subscribe to the RSS feed for the entire site, as well as for the comments that are made on any post on the site, to keep up to date with all our geeking. Second, the Site Login link. This will allow you to register a username for the site, which is required for you to post comments (if you don’t create a username, you’ll be guided through the process the first time you try to comment).

You should also explore the other links on this line, as they bring you to the tools that we’ve put under the hood to make GwI Online work. We only promote these services because we like them and because they are serving us well.

Thanks to everyone who joined us by giving us your money, helping to get the word out, watching us on the webcast, and hanging out with us in our chatroom during Saturday’s broadcast. Your support helped see us through the 24 hours, and made the event a complete success.

Tuck will have the official numbers in a few days after the straggler donations come it, but you helped us raise at least $512.89 for two very worthy charities.

As you may have noticed, the live feed has retired from the charity section of our website. The feed has returned to it’s home under the “Live Feed” tab at the top of the geekswithissues.com. For the time being it will be showing old episodes of our show. We definitely plan on firing it up again however, most likely during our impending trip to New York Comic Con in a few short months. We are also going to try out the live feed during our next taping, so check in on the Saturday, January 3rd, 2009 and you can watch the Geeks with Issues record their first episodes of the new year live.

We expect to take a few more days off to enjoy the Holidays, but the site will be back in full force after that, kicking off with the realease of our Holiday Episode, #106 on Friday.

If you want to stay involved with the Geeks with Issues, be sure to head over to GwI United, our social networking site and sign up. You can also become a fan of Geeks with Issues on Facebook.

MTV will follow a fanboy around New York Comic Con and bring the "True Life" of a super-fan to the small screen. Is that a good thing?

An interesting email came through my inbox a few weeks ago. I meant to write about it sooner, but the job that pays my bills has been kicking my butt lately. It came from the folks that run New York Comic Con, and it had the following to announce:

New York Comic Con (NYCC) is working closely with MTV to help them cast a “fanboy” segment for the network’s award-winning True Life documentary series. All interested fanboys are encouraged to apply immediately at www.nycomiccon.com/mtvtruelife and all applications will be reviewed by the talent and production staff at MTV’s True Life.

Are you obsessed with comic books, anime, fantasy, or manga? Do you like to dress up as your favorite character and attend conventions with other fans? Have you ever waited in line overnight for a book, movie, or videogame release? Do you have tattoos depicting your favorite brand or characters? Have you ever missed work, school, or other important events to engage in role-playing or cosplay? Are you misunderstood by your family or significant other because of it? Have you ever been told to “grow up” by someone important to you? If you’re an obsessed fanboy (or girl), MTV wants to hear from you.

If you appear to be between the ages of 16 and 28 and identify with any of the above, MTV wants to hear your story. Go to www.nycomiccon.com/mtvtruelife and follow the directions for filling out the application!

Setting aside the “Where hath the music videos gone?” rant that comes to mind when I discuss MTV, I wanted to get the thoughts of the Geeks and True Believers on this.

First of all, I think it’s pretty cool that a major network is working on a project that will bring the con-going experience to your teevee. Despite being initially nervous about how an MTV program would portray a super-fan at Comic Con, the fact that this show will be produced by the “True Life” team calms me a bit. I’ve only caught pieces of a few episodes of True Life that my sixteen-year-old sister was watching, but the show is suprisingly smart and sensitive. It’s certainly not the standard fare that appeals to the stupid club or the anxty girls at your local high school. They’ve run the gamut from serious topics (”I’m Dead Broke”) to fun and interesting topics (”I’m Backpacking Across Europe”), so it could be a good show. At the same time, it could have a very sideshow quality to it.

So, what do you think? Is “True Life: I’m a Fanboy” another step in the mainstreaming of geekdom? Will we see more shows like this? Will the episode have a “Look at this Freak!” feel? Or will it be a fun look at an interesting person’s life, but ultimately be a non-event?

Why isn't there more?

I’m a big Geek, this should be no surprise. As such, this is the time of year when I find myself saddened that Halloween gets the short end of the stick when it comes to holiday music. Every artist and his brother has cut a Christmas album, but there is a severe shortage of Halloween music.

I do my best each October to scour the internets and bulk up my pathetic Halloween playlist, usually to no avail. Sure, I’ve got plenty of horror movie theme songs, but that’s just not enough sometimes.

I’ve had limited success in my hunt, but I did find a winner last year that I want to share with you. It’s a song by the band Singlefile called “Zombies Ate My Neighbors”.

Yes, it’s a send-up to the classic 1993 Konami Horror classic of the same name:
